The dying Earl Bromleigh wishes to end a long-standing quarrel of many generations with his neighbor, the 'rival' Earl Kimborogh. He plots to reconcile the two families by proposing a marriage between his daughter Sabina Bromley and the other earl's brother, Captain Robert Ashton. To ensure the marriage takes place, Bromleigh makes the marriage a condition of Lady Sabina's inheritance. Robert Ashton is not averse as he has been in love with Sabina Bromley from first sight. The lady's response to the reading of the will however is totally hostile. She dashes off on a horse in a maelstrom of emotions only to meet with an accident and require rescuing by the very man her heart is sent against. Luckily for the hopes of our hero, she has no idea what Captain Ashton looks like, so believes herself to be falling in love with a benevolent stranger. Unfortunately, reality soon sets in and the infatuated pair must face the consequences of their prolonged deception.This is a solid regency albeit one I didn't read compulsively. That can be a positive from time to time if the novel offers other pleasures outside the principle romantic relationship. I wished there had been more written about river boating through the locks during the period of Sabina's 'amnesia' when Robert is pretending to be a lock keeper. I did enjoy the character of Rose as wise older woman to whom Ashton and Sabina separately appeal for guidance. However at times Captain Ashton frankly disappointed me as almost complacent about Sabina's turmoil and I found myself losing interest in the story.
I am hoping Amazon Kindle/Regency Reads will soon release Elisabeth Kidd's more highly praised "A Hero for Antonia" and sequel "My Lady Mischief".
